Here's an interesting clip that was cut from Michael Moore's movie "Sicko" about Norway's health care system:

Norway was removed from the film because its health care system possess numerous benefits similar to the French system. For example, Norwegian patients treated for an illness like psoriasis or rheumatism are eligible for two weeks paid vacation at a spa in the Canary Islands.[52] Norway hires a government ethicist to determine who they should spend their money on, because they want to do it in an ethical way.[53]

i remember how vexed the urgent care office was when trying to figure out how much to charge us for an arm bandage when we took owen in--for norwegians it would have been free. i think it was something like $10 right? the actual cost of the adhesive.
but it is a trade off right? i had an mri done in a week and was able to get to physical therapy and see an orthopedist when i was having sciatic pain--the norwegians you talked to were so shocked that this could all be done so quickly. yes, at cost and having to navigate insurance--but there is a definite pay up front. the cost of living, to us here in the states, in norway is outrageous (like our 23k jeep selling for 70k over there)but everyone pays in for an equitable cost of living. and of course, the thing that hit me this last time coming home from europe was (despite the fact that yes, most of us are monolingual) how homongenous it is--i mean, check out the clip from moore. a lot of fair skinned norwegians and the polish immigrants that are there are not exactly enjoying htese benefits. but then the maternity leave and political representation of women does make you go hmmmm.
